Chimney sweep cleaning a fireplace flue

Service · A1 Chimney & Roofing

Creosote Removal

Creosote removal takes the flammable deposits of a wood fire out of the flue. Light creosote is part of a sweep. Glazed creosote is the hardened form that needs a deeper cleaning.

The work

What is creosote removal?

Smoke condenses on a cool flue and leaves a deposit. In thin, flaky layers a brush removes it. In a glazed layer it has melted and re-hardened, and a brush will not lift it. The visit identifies which one you have and uses the cleaning that matches it.

The standard brush cleaning is a chimney sweep. The heavier cleaning is deep cleaning. Removal does not repair a flue the creosote fire already cracked.

Why it matters

Why this work matters

Creosote is the fuel for a chimney fire. The thicker and harder it is, the less of a draft problem it has to be before it matters. Removing it is the point of the visit.

A fireplace that roars, smells sharp, or has a shiny black coating in the firebox is a reason to stop burning until the flue is cleaned.
