What is fireplace masonry repair?

Firebrick is a different brick from the exterior chimney brick. It takes direct flame. When it cracks or the joints burn out, heat and gases can reach the masonry behind it. The repair cuts out the failed firebrick and resets new units, and repacks joints that have opened.

If the damage is the brick stack outside, that is chimney masonry repair. The smoke chamber just above the damper is smoke chamber repair.
