What is smoke chamber parging?

Older smoke chambers are rough brick and mortar. Every ledge catches soot, and every open joint is a path for gases. Parging fills those joints and gives the smoke a smooth slope into the flue. The masonry underneath has to be sound. Coating over loose brick does not hold.

If the brick itself has failed, the job is smoke chamber repair first. A flue full of creosote is a sweep, not a coating.
