Energy-Efficient Roofing & Chimney Solutions

The roof and the chimney decide how much heat the house holds. The usual leaks are an open damper, a gap in the attic around the chase, and flashing where the roof meets the brick.

The hidden energy loss above your head

Four places on a chimney-and-roof visit. This is not a whole-house energy audit.

Attic gaps

Insulation that stops short of the chase lets the rooms under that roof lose heat. Blown-in insulation is the usual fill.

Open damper

A damper that will not shut leaves the flue open all day. Heated air goes up. Damper repair is the first check.

Flashing

The joint where the roof meets the chimney leaks air and water. Flashing repair closes that gap.

The roof

A wet deck and tired shingles cook the rooms underneath. Roof repair or a replacement when the field is done.

A better roof can mean a more comfortable home

A sound roof keeps water out of the insulation. A reflective or lighter roof can take less sun, and we talk about that when the roof is being replaced. We do not sell a separate cool-roof coating.

Don't let heated air escape up the chimney

An idle fireplace should be a closed flue. Rain is why people leave the damper cracked. A cap lets it stay shut. An insert is for a firebox you burn in, not a substitute for a damper that does not close.

One home. Two systems.

The attic, the insulation, the flashing, and the damper are one path for heat. Air that leaks at the chase wets the insulation. Wet insulation stops working. A damper left open pulls on that same air.

On a roof visit we look at the attic side. There is no separate ventilation package. If the attic is thin, that is insulation. If the metal at the brick is open, that is flashing.

Your path to a more efficient home

What the visit actually covers. Damper, cap, crown, flashing, and the attic side of the roof.

01

1. Ask

Name, phone, ZIP, and whether it is the roof, the chimney, or both.

02

2. We look

Damper, cap, crown, flashing, and the attic side. Not a full energy audit.

03

3. The price

You hear what is open, and the price, before any work starts.

04

4. The work

Same crew for the chimney and the roof. Approved work only.

Energy efficiency questions

Can an energy-efficient roof lower my energy bills?

It can when the old roof is leaking into the insulation or the deck is heat-soaked. A new roof is not an automatic bill cut. If the shingles are sound and the attic is thin, start with insulation. Roof replacement and attic insulation.

How do I know if my roof is causing heat loss?

Rooms under the roof run hot or cold, insulation by the chimney is damp, or the flashing is open. A roof inspection looks at the shingles and the chimney joint. It is not a whole-house energy audit.

Does an open chimney damper waste energy?

Yes. An open damper is an open flue. Heated air leaves in winter and cooled air leaves in summer. Damper repair is the first check when you feel that draft.

How can I stop heat from escaping through my fireplace?

Close a damper that still seals. If it will not close, repair it. A cap keeps rain out so the damper can stay shut. An insert is for a firebox you use, not a fix for a damper that simply does not close.

Can roof ventilation improve energy efficiency?

Air moving through the attic can keep the deck cooler and the insulation drier. We do not sell a separate ventilation package. On a roof visit we look at the attic side. Thin insulation is a blown-in insulation job.

Is attic insulation or a new roof better for energy savings?

Insulation first when the roof is still sound and the attic is thin. A roof first when water is getting in, because wet insulation does not work. We say which one after we see both.

How much can roofing and chimney improvements save?

EPA estimates about 15% off heating and cooling, and about 11% off the total energy bill, for air sealing plus insulation across a whole house. ENERGY STAR. A damper, a cap, or flashing repair is a smaller job. We do not promise those percents.

How much does an energy efficiency inspection cost?

We do not publish a flat fee. This is not a full home energy audit. We look at the damper, the cap, the crown, the flashing, and the attic side of the roof. You hear what is open, and the price, before any work. Call (855) 8-CALL-A1.

How much could the house save?

EPA estimates for air sealing and adding insulation. Not a quote for a roof or chimney repair. ENERGY STAR — Why Seal and Insulate.

15%

Average heating and cooling cost. Whole-house air sealing and insulation.

11%

Average total energy cost. Same whole-house air sealing and insulation, across the full bill.
