Chimney sweep cleaning a fireplace flue

Chimney Sweep

A chimney sweep removes the soot and creosote a fire leaves in the flue, the smoke chamber, and the firebox. It is a cleaning. It is not a rebuild, and it is not a certificate that the chimney is sound.

The work

What is a chimney sweep?

The flue is brushed, the debris is pulled from the firebox and the base of the chimney, and the damper and the readily visible parts are looked at. A cap screen clogged with debris is noted. Light, flaky creosote comes off with the brush. Hard, glazed creosote does not. That needs deep cleaning.

If the visit finds a cracked crown, open flashing, or a damaged liner, you are told. The repair is a separate job, such as chimney repair, and it does not start unless you approve it.

Why it matters

Why this work matters

Creosote is combustible. Sweeping it out is how you keep a normal fire from becoming a chimney fire. A fireplace that has been used through a season, or that has started to smell or draft poorly, is the usual reason to sweep.

How often depends on how often you burn and what you burn. A cold fireplace that has not been used does not need a sweep on a calendar.
